My son had an extra day of vacation to use up so we decided to tackle another Sedona hike on my list! We had a few hikes on our list but the trail #1 on the list had no parking and way too crowded. That lead us to trail #2 on the list, Bear Mountain. One of the most challenging hikes I have done in sedona!

We parked in the Fay Canyon trailhead parking lot, not knowing that Bear Mountain Trail does have it’s own parking area. This probably added 1.5 miles to our hike. We started on Cockscomb and cut across to Aerie and made our way up and around to the Bear Mountain Trailhead parking lot. There was a few mountain bikers on Cockscomb trail.

Once we actually reached the correct trailhead our journey up began.

I would say this trail you are climbing up 90% of the time. Bear Mountain is rated HARD on all Trails. It is a 4.9 mile out and back trail. It features a river, 360 views and pretty difficult. There is a 1,975ft elevation gain. I do not recommend this hike for kids.

It does get cold as you keep climbing and there is a few false summits so keep going after the first two! When you reach the end, there will be a sign (end of trail) so you know you reached the end. Bring plenty of snacks and plan to have a picnic. I say this trail takes 3-4 hours total and most of the time is spent climbing up. The way down is a lot faster took about an hour down.
